Kartavenko Sergey Stepanovich (Картавенко Сергей Степанович)
Head of Department of Pain Syndromes Therapy of Consultative-Diagnostic Center of National Research Center for Preventive Medicine, M.D., Ph.D.
Born in 1947 (on the 3rd of September) in Moscow. His father, Kartavenko Stepan Nikitovich (1911-1981), was an engineer-constructor; mother, Kartavenko Olga Pimenovna (1912-1985), was a modiste of the female dress. His wife, Kartavenko (nee Burova) Elena Makeyevna (born 02.05.1948) is a pediatric ophthalmologist. Their daughter, Kartavenko Olga (born 03.04.1973) is a medical sister.
Sergey S.Kartavenko entered in 1966 and graduated in 1972 from the N.I.Pirogov Second Moscow State Medical Institute (now Russian State Medical University), pediatric faculty. His profession is an anesthesiologist-resuscitator.
He is a specialist in the field of therapy of acute and chronic pain, acupuncture and other integrative and alternative methods of treatment. His working activity began after graduation from the secondary school, in 1965 in Kaluga, at the factory of pirometric facilities, as a specialist on electronics wiring (1965-1966). After graduation from the Medical Institute, from 1972 to 1974, he studied anesthesiology and resuscitation in clinical residency (ordinatura) in the M.F. Vladimirsky Moscow Regional Clinical Research Institute (MONIKI). From 1974 to 1980 he worked as a physician of the MONIKI Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation. In parallel with medical practice, worked as a researcher in the field of physical methods of analgesia and anesthesia. Since 1975, on his own initiative, started mastering acupuncture as a method of treatment of acute and chronic pain. In 1976 he completed the basic course of training on reflexotherapy (acupuncture, electropuncture, the principles of R.Voll’s method). In 1979 completed the course of advanced medical training on acupuncture and neurology in the Central Institute of Advanced Medical Training. From 1980 to 1989 worked as a scientific worker in the Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation of MONIKI.
In 1987, Sergey S.Kartavenko defended his dissertation concerning application of a new self-elaborated method (1978, USSR patent) of non-invasive electropuncture analgesia, using sinusoidal modulated current, in maxillofacial surgery and stomatology. In 1989, S.Kartavenko was elected via competition on a vacant position of a superior scientific worker of the MONIKI Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation. In 1991, he initiated organization of a research and practical group engaged in physical and alternative methods of analgesia and pain therapy (functioning as Moscow Regional Therapeutic and Methodological Center on this problem) and headed this group in 1991-1994.
In 1992, by the Supreme State Commission for Awarding Academic Degrees, he was awarded an status of a "Superior Scientific Worker" on the specialty of "Anesthesiology and Resuscitation." During 1991-1993, he studied at the Advanced Courses of R.Voll’s electropuncture diagnosis and therapy, Su Jok acupuncture, Ayurveda, and was awarded a certificate of Hypnologist. From 1994 to 1996, he worked as a superior scientific worker, and the present time is a leading researcher, the head of the group of the electropulse analgesia and therapy group, at the Department of Pain Syndromes Therapy of the Russian Scientific Center of Surgery of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
Sergey S.Kartavenko, for his scientific and practical achievements, was awarded a series of honorable rewards: a Golden Medal and a Certificate of the World Judges of the First World Exhibition of Achievements of Young Inventors "EXPO-85" (for a new high-effective method of electropuncture analgesia); a premium and a title of a Moscow Region Prize-Winner in the field of science and technique (1980) for working out new methods of electropuncture analgesia in maxillofacial surgery and stomatology; a Golden and Silver Medals of the Exhibition of National Economic Achievements of the USSR (VDNKH); a series of certificates including that of the World Exhibition "Health Care-90" (for the high scientific and technical level of the "EPANAL"- type apparatus for reflex electropuncture analgesia and therapy); and World Exhibition «INNOTECH EXPO-2009» (apparatus-complex «AREAT» for resonance electropuncture analgesia and therapy ); a State Symbol and an honorable title "Inventor of the USSR".
He has more than 35-year-long scientific and practical experience in treatment of the different types of acute and chronic pain. He is one of the leading Russian specialists and experts in the field of electropulse analgesia and therapy. He made clinical trials of and assessed expert estimations over practically all national apparatus for reflex electroeffect upon human organism, over many foreign apparatus of this type. He himself is an ideologist of creation and an elaborator of the original apparatus of such a type. Has the greatest among the Russian specialists personal experience in application of electropuncture and electroacupuncture analgesia in surgical operations (including those with retained patient’s conscience and "pure-type" ones) in maxillofacial and other fields of surgery, and in stomatology ( more than 500 patients treated). Worked out his own original methods of electropuncture and acupuncture analgesia during surgery and in postoperative periods. Obtained the best by now results in Russia and the whole World in physical treatment (using electropulse and combined methods) of a series of pain syndromes, diseases and conditions (including trigeminal nerve neuralgia, post-herpetic neuralgia, pain in chronic pancreatitis exacerbation, ulcerous disease of stomach and duodenum, functional recovery of the peripheral nerve trunks and fibers in ischemic and traumatic neurites, etc.) He has discovered one of the chief mechanisms of action of such a centuries-old mysterious phenomena as a quack’s or shaman’s spells curing diseases: in 1980 he advanced a working hypothesis of the resonance (acoustic and electromagnetic) mechanism of these phenomena, extrapolated this explanation upon psychotherapy and "Kashpirovsky’s phenomenon," and on a series of other phenomena often observed in everyday life which had no explanation by that time, and then, for the first time, proved this concept experimentally. On the basis of this concept, with due regard for the dosed out bioresonance effect, worked out and substantiated the new approaches to electropulse and acoustic influence on human organism (on acupuncture points and systems, on definite body areas and the organism as a whole) to provide analgesic and curing effect via activation (or, on the contrary — inhibition) of one or another biooscillation processes and systems. Substantiated theoretically and elaborated a novel method of non-invasive resonance electropuncture analgesia and therapy (REAT), differing in essence from all known methods of electropuncture and transcutaneous electroneurostimulation, providing up to 5 types of analgesic effect, and highly effective as well. REAT-method, with regard for its non-invasiveness, comfortableness, security and a high therapeutic efficacy, appeared for the first time to be a real alternative to invasive methods of reflex analgesia and reflexotherapy (acupuncture, electroacupuncture) to be used in common medical practice. It’s especially important in contemporary conditions of AIDS and infectious hepatitis dissemination. To put the REAT-method into common medical practice, he worked out, together with the specialists in electronics, the several types of apparatus which have no world analogues. Basing on the new access to the conception of the generator mechanisms formation in the Central Nervous System (CNS), offered by G.N.Kryzhanovsky, as well as of pattern-generating mechanisms (R.Melzack and J.Loeser), he has substantiated theoretically a basic principle of preventing the development or essentially reducing the intensity of phantom limb pain and postoperative pain. To achieve it, he offered to apply a preventively created contemporary (but long-acting) artificial peripheral generator of enhanced stimulation, directed strictly into a certain CNS area, which is to prevent formation in the latter of a central generator of the pathologically enhanced excitation or to make its formation rather difficult via reducing its stability. Elaborated concrete, clinically effective electropuncture and acupuncture methods to solve the problem, and succeeded in its application.
He has more than 110 publications and manuscripts in the field of investigation and practical application of reflex, electropulse and combined methods of analgesia and treatment in surgery and in postoperative periods, in stomatology, in different types of acute and chronic pain syndromes as well as in working out new methods and apparatus types for this purpose. He possesses a patent defending an original mode of electropuncture analgesia; know-how describing a series of other high-effective modes and procedures of electropuncture analgesia and treatment; know-how for the apparatus, having no world analogues, to apply these methods in clinical practice. In parallel with his chief investigations, elaborated an original method to improve the condition of the head hair and skin, to treat alopecia areata.
In his common life follows the principle: " Not to be said, but to be!". By the turn of mind, he is a generator of ideas. His beloved occupation is a rummaging through books (professional and others) as well as a "brainstorming" to solve different difficult problems, prognosing and analysing various situations. In his spare time, in addition to occupation mentioned, meets his friends, listens to music, visits exhibitions and museums, watches some shows and films on TV, goes for rest to the country. He likes to play chess, to watch the leading sportsmen and -women playing tennis. His musical preferences include instrumental and vocal music of different genres, classic music including that in modern rendering, Russian and Ukrainian folk songs, Spanish guitar, French chanson, ABBA, Beatles, blues compositions, American rock-a-billy, country music) — the main thing is that the music must do for the soul condition. Enjoys Vladimir Spivakov and his "Virtuosos of Moscow."
Sergey S.Kartavenko considers himself very lucky being engaged in a favorite business, happy in his family and among friends. Feels himself very much obliged to his parents (wonderful people - let their blessed memory live forever), to his wife Elena, to his friends, especially the most close of them, and to his professional teachers, namely: professor V.N. Tsybulyak, a world-wide renowned specialist, who as far back as in 1970s organized, for the first time in Russia, a specialized department of pain syndromes therapy ("pain clinic"), and has been continuously heading it by now within Russian Research Center of Surgery of RAMS; also well known professor V.Yu. Ostrovsky, an anesthesiologist-resuscitator who has, unfortunately, gone so early; the other renowned specialists who taught him the basic elements of acupuncture, electro-puncture and other types of reflexotherapy: first of all, V.G. Nikiforov, then M.K. Usova, prof. V.S. Goydenko, I.P. Chkalova, such a famous master as Gavaa Luvsan, whose work he watched many times. With gratitude remembers his school teachers, professors and readers of the Second Moscow State Medical Institute. He bows low before all of them.
Sergey S.Kartavenko lives in Moscow Region, in the town Mytishchi, works in Moscow.

Department of Pain Syndromes Therapy
Moscow, Russia
In view of great frequency of AIDS and infectious hepatitis, non-invasive methods of treatment apprear to be of great importance. Method of resonance electropuncture analgesia and therapy (REAT) worked out by the author is based on integration of some basic principles of traditional eastern acupuncture and novel, specially elaborated ones of non- invasive electroinfluence on patient with sinusoidal complexly modulated current. It’s been established that one basic mechanisms of REAT action is resonance activation (or, on the contrary, inhibition) of some biooscillatory processes and systems of the organism.
REAT provides up to 5 types of analgesia (using our classification: meridianal, regional, «micropuncture» projection organo-zonal, local; total hipoalgesia) and renders pronounced therapeutic effect via creation, in addition to analgesic, of sedative, relaxing, vasodilative effects (or, if necessary, of contrary ones: tonic, myostimulating, moderate vasoconstrictive); peripheral microcirculation improvement; oedema reduction, anti- inflammatory and immunomodulation effects; normalisation and activation of metabolism; acceleration of injured tissues regeneration.
After 20 years of clinical observations and studies (the former abbreviations for the method were EPA, EPA SMC), reliably established is higher efficacy of REAT (as compared with acupuncture, electroacupuncture, common electropuncture, and TENS ) in many pain syndromes including such most difficult for treatment as post-herpetic neuralgia (mean REAT efficacy - 86,7% ), trigeminal nerve neuralgia ( 94,1% ), pain in chronic pancreatitis exacerbation (82,3%), phantom limb pain (85,7%). In addition to high efficacy and security, REAT has such merits as convenience, indolence and comfort in application.
Original apparatus «EPANAL» has been worked out for clinical application of REAT.
